COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Rowan Hart is a 24-year-old University of South Carolina graduate who bartends at Five Points. He’s also a singer looking to make a name for himself online.

But there’s one other thing to know about Hart: he doesn’t exist.

Steve Varholy, a Columbia artist, created the fictional musician using artificial intelligence, voice-changing technology and his own written music. Varholy told WIS that the idea of Hart began after he saw a friend do something similar.

“And then he went through the process of creating a character…an AI artist. And I was like, that’s interesting…I am going to try that myself,” Varholy said.

Varholy uses AI voice-changing software to create Hart’s vocals, describing the process as similar to advanced Auto-Tune.

“So you have the real human singing it, but it’s gone through the process,” he said. “A human is guiding the phrasing.”

The fictional Hart is described as a University of South Carolina graduate and “South Carolina-based multi-media persona” focused on “songs, stories and a little southern soul.”

It’s a project that has taken countless hours. As Varholy explains, AI isn’t creative; he has to tell it to do everything.

“AI is a computer. It’s not creative. But humans are. Humans can be creative. It’s just a tool,” said Varholy.

“There’s issues of are people being deceived? I don’t know. You got to a movie, you don’t go, Harry Potter is deceiving because he’s not really Harry Potter,” he said. “There are issues about who is the author. Is it protectable under copyright law?”

Varholy said he didn’t expect Hart to attract thousands of listeners when he started the project, but wants to continue expressing himself through this new creative endeavor.

When asked if Varholy is considered to be Rowan, he said no. Rowan is his own person, created using AI.

For now, Varholy said the future of the Rowan Hart project remains undecided.

“Maybe in the end, Rowan decides to listen to his parents and get an accounting degree and become a CPA. Work in Charlotte, have kids and a house out in Ballentine, or out on the lake, who knows,” he said.

Varholy also explained that he plans to continue creating new music and hopes to venture into short films and music videos. Varholy said he didn’t expect the project to get so popular, with some expressing frustration that they can’t go see Hart in person at a concert.

“I think it’s pretty obvious,” he said. “He’s a generated character and people are disappointed that he isn’t real.”
