MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The final report from Governor Kay Ivey’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force has been published. Almost one year prior in April 2024, ABC 33/40 attended the inaugural meeting which set the stage for exploring the potential uses of AI in government. Dustin Bailey from Microsoft highlighted the transformative impact AI could have if responsibly implemented at that meeting.
“It offers incredible potential but it does require responsibility. The potential is enormous,” said Bailey. He emphasized that AI “will have a profound impact both in short and long term in the state of Alabama.”
Bailey provided examples of AI applications, including policy analysis and development for lawmakers, personalized learning experiences for educators, addressing healthcare challenges for nurses, and evidence-based decision systems for law enforcement.

Jeremy Ward, Director of Communications at the Office of Information Technology, said the purpose of the task force is to, “Understand how we might be able to utilize it (AI) to enhance governmental capabilities and functions.”
The final report acknowledges the risks associated with AI, such as privacy concerns, misinformation, security threats, and bias. It also outlines potential uses of generative AI to enhance efficiency in areas like policy and governance, law enforcement and public safety, citizen services, healthcare, transportation, and environmental monitoring.
Instead of immediate widespread adoption, the report recommends implementing policies at state and agency levels to guide AI usage, with regular audits to ensure compliance and safety.
