MONROE, La. (KNOE) -CNN reports that in August 2025, California parents of a 16-year-old filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming ChatGPT gave harmful advice that contributed to their son’s death by suicide.
The case is sparking nationwide conversations, and local experts are warning that artificial intelligence tools are not equipped to handle issues as serious as mental health.

Louisiana Tech Industrial Organizational Psychologist, Dr. Tilman Sheets, says while companies are working to create safeguards, risks remain.
“Good data and bad data training in it, they are getting better at providing guardrails, making rules that will help prevent AI from making some of these egregious mistakes. It’s still a very dangerous thing. And my warning would be to kids: don’t trust it, don’t rely on it. And I would especially tell that to parents.”
