FS Italiane and Microsoft launch strategic AI partnership

FS Italiane and Microsoft have entered into a strategic partnership to accelerate the Group’s digital transformation, marking one of the most ambitious AI-driven collaborations in Europe’s transport sector. The agreement aims to support more than 50,000 employees with advanced productivity tools and embed responsible innovation across key business processes.

The initiative positions FS Italiane as a leading player in digitalisation and sustainability, consistent with the Group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. By combining Microsoft’s AI technologies with FS’s operational expertise, the collaboration seeks to modernise mobility services, enhance efficiency and strengthen competitiveness.

“The collaboration with Microsoft represents an additional step in the Group’s transformation strategy,” said Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of FS Italiane. “Artificial Intelligence allows us to innovate processes, enhance skills and contribute to mobility that increasingly focuses on people. It is also an opportunity to support the growth of our employees, guiding them through a professional and cultural evolution that places knowledge and new technologies at the service of the country’s development.”

AI tools and workforce training

Under the agreement, FS Italiane will roll out Microsoft 365 Copilot to more than 50,000 employees. The AI-based productivity assistant will be accompanied by dedicated training and skills-development programmes to ensure effective adoption and to support cultural evolution within the organisation.

The partnership is expected to deliver improvements in several areas:

  • Operational efficiency through streamlined processes and reduced time spent on repetitive tasks.
  • Enhanced service design, enabling more personalised, responsive and efficient products for the rail and mobility ecosystem.
  • Skills development, ensuring employees can leverage AI tools to focus on higher-value tasks.

The agreement builds on longstanding cooperation between FS and Microsoft across various innovation projects in recent years.

“We are proud to collaborate with the FS Group to accelerate their AI-based transformation,” said Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business. “By combining the Group’s deep industrial expertise with Microsoft’s cutting-edge AI technologies, we will help realise their vision for smarter, more sustainable and more personalised travel, setting a new standard for modern mobility in Italy.”

Supporting innovation and sustainability

The partnership reflects FS Italiane’s commitment to aligning digitalisation with sustainability goals. By integrating AI systems into rail and transport services, the Group aims to optimise operations, simplify interactions between people and technology, and improve the quality of daily mobility for millions of passengers.

Microsoft 365 Copilot will act as the interface through which FS employees access AI agents designed to support operational decision-making, service quality and system performance. These tools are expected to strengthen monitoring capabilities and help ensure more reliable services for customers.
