It’s fair to say that Guillermo del Toro will never use generative A.I. in any of his future projects, especially since he’s never had any desire to use it before. “My concern is not artificial intelligence, but natural stupidity. I think that’s what drives most of the world’s worst features,” del Toro told NPR, when talking about his newest film, Frankenstein. “AI, particularly generative AI — I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I’m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak.” Frankenstein’s monster was manmade, after all.

Filmmakers are divided on whether there’s an appropriate place for A.I. in the workplace. The Russo Brothers used it for voice modulation in their movie The Electric State, and then there’s the attempted introduction of A.I. actress Tilly Norwood. But it’s clear that del Toro wants no part of this: “The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die.’”
