AI as a gift — and a test
“The rapid development of AI raises deeper questions concerning its use to generate a more authentically just and human global society,” the Pope stated.
He echoed Pope Francis’ view that AI is “above all else a tool” and must be shaped by the intentions of its creators and users. While acknowledging AI’s noble applications — such as improving healthcare and promoting equality — he cautioned against its potential misuse for personal gain or to foment conflict.
Integral development at heart
Pope Leo called attention to principles from the Church’s teaching document Antiqua et Nova, urging AI development to respect the “integral development of the human person and society.”
He highlighted that human well-being extends beyond material gain to include spiritual and intellectual dimensions, reminding participants to place dignity at the center of technological progress.
He cautioned that while Generative AI opens new intellectual horizons, it also risks distancing us from truth, beauty, and a full grasp of reality — core elements of human identity. For him, an adequate ethical framework must begin with an honest appreciation of human uniqueness.
Protecting the young
Special emphasis fell on children and youth. The Pope voiced concern over AI’s impact on neurological and intellectual development, urging societies to help young people mature responsibly.
“Access to data — however extensive — must not be confused with intelligence,” he warned, quoting Antiqua et Nova. True wisdom, he reminded participants, involves openness to life’s deepest questions and an orientation toward the True and the Good.
Pope Leo encouraged conference delegates to view AI governance as part of an “intergenerational apprenticeship,” where the older and wiser guide youth in integrating technological tools into moral and spiritual formation. This, he said, is vital to nurturing solidarity and unity in a rapidly changing world.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo expressed gratitude for the conference’s efforts, invoking “the divine blessings of wisdom, joy and peace” upon participants and their families. His words mark a clear invitation: to place humanity at the centre of AI’s future.
